Depression Linked to Ovarian but not Colorectal Screening Noncompliance Among Latina Breast Cancer Survivors

Depression, in addition to other barriers, may prevent Latina breast cancer survivors from undergoing preventive health screening for colorectal and ovarian cancer, according to data presented at the Fourth AACR Conference on The Science of Cancer Health Disparities, held in Washington DC, September 18-21, 2011.

“Depression can make people more inattentive to potential risks to their health and more likely to ignore recommendations to reduce their risk,”…

Researchers Find Critical Step in Personalizing Cancer Treatments

Scientists have begun to reveal the order of the genetic aberrations in individual cancers in a finding they say is key to early diagnosis and personalized medicine.

“We know that each cancer is a collection of genetic malfunctions,” said Raymond Cho, Ph.D., an assistant clinical professor in the department of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). “We now show it is possible to determine which changes happen earlier and which ones… Continue

Maintenance Therapy + PARP Inhibitors Play Important Roles in Treatment of Relapsed Ovarian Cancer

A Phase II randomized trial showed that maintenance treatment with the oral PARP inhibitor drug olaparib improved progression-free survival by about four months in women with the most common type of relapsed ovarian cancer. This is the first randomized trial to demonstrate a benefit for maintenance therapy for recurrent ovarian cancer, and the first randomized trial in ovarian cancer of a PARP inhibitor – a novel class of molecularly targeted drugs.

Research Shows OVA1 Blood Test Detects Ovarian Cancer More Accurately Than CA 125 Method

A study published online ahead of print in the June 2011 edition of Obstetrics & Gynecology demonstrated that American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) guidelines for determining the likelihood that an ovarian mass is cancerous prior to surgery would accurately identify more women with ovarian cancer if the OVA1 blood test were used in place of the currently recommended CA 125 blood test. The study builds on prior research that shows accurate assessment of an ovarian… Continue

ASCO 2010: Promising New Ovarian Cancer Screening Strategy Developed for Post-Menopausal Women at Average Risk

There are virtually no effective screening tools for the early detection of ovarian cancer in women at average population risk of getting the disease. But researchers have now tested a promising new screening approach for post-menopausal women at average risk of ovarian cancer. The strategy uses a mathematical model that combines trends in CA-125 blood test results and a patient's age, followed by transvaginal ultrasound and referral to a gynecologic oncologist, if necessary. The… Continue
