Onco'Zine - The International Oncology Network is on-site at the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting held at the McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, from June 1-5, 2012. The ASCO meeting is one of the largest scientific events in oncology organized in the world. In 2011, more than 32,000 attendees gathered to listen, learn and network.
Each year ASCO draws an international audience of healthcare professionals involved in the management and care of cancer patients, including medical, hematologic, surgical, radiation, pediatric, and gynecologic oncologists, as well as pharmacists, nurses, physician assistants and other healthcare professionals.
This year, leading oncology experts, KOLs and researchers will present the latest advances in clinical cancer research relating to the theme of: Collaborating to Conquer Cancer. This year the focus of the meeting will be the benefits of multidisciplinary collaboration of the cancer team in treating patients. New and ongoing research has show that close collaboration will help enhance the quality of care provided to patients.
Almost 50 years of ongoing research
"Nearly 50 years into the era of modern oncology, we can clearly see the fruits of our research investments," said Michael Link, MD, President of ASCO. "Findings to be presented at ASCO’s 2012 Annual Meeting are part of the latest chapter in the history of progress against cancer." Commenting on the results of ongoing research over the years, Link told his audience that "Today’s studies demonstrate improvements in precision medicine that identify and exploit cancer’s genetic weak spots to halt tumor growth and in some cases eradicate disease." and that "other studies [presented at ASCO] give us valuable new tools and information to lessen the short- and long-term side effects of cancer treatment for our patients."
